WETT Inc. (Wood Energy Technology Transfer Inc.) is a non-profit training organization that provides in-depth training for inspectors of wood-burning appliances to check for code compliance and adherence to safety requirements. A WETT certified inspector has met the qualifications for performing these inspections.
There are three levels of WETT Inspections, Level 1, 2 and 3. If you are purchasing a home in Orillia, then you only require a Level 1 Inspection. Why? Well, a level One WETT Inspection is all that is requried by Insurance Companies and your Local Building Departments. Some WETT Inspectors will use try and use the American Inspection requirements to increase the cost of your inspection. They will quote the US NFPA-211 regulation which is not recognized in Canada. But that aside, a home Orillia is no different than any other home. Homes being purchased in almost all cases have no known history of how the wood burning system was used, the wood burned, how hot it was burned (high heat can damage the system), when it was last maintained or even cleaned.
Some of the Items a Level One WETT Inspection will check includes the visual examination of smoke chambers, fireboxes, dampers, chimneys, chimney liners, hearths and clearances, including distances from combustibles for wood stove and flue stove vent pipes. The components covered by each inspection differ depending on the wood-burning appliance, thus there are separate inspections for fireplaces, wood stoves and pellet stoves. If concerns are identified, a more comprehensive inspection may be required.

When an insert of hearth-mounted stove is installed in a fireplace, a full chiney liner meeting the requirements of ULC S635, class 3, or CAN/ULC -S640 shall be installed in the chimney. The liner shall extend from the appliance to the top of the chimney and be securely attached to both.
WETT Inspection Levels
Maybe you have lived in your home for years and you simply want peace of mind – a Level 1 will provide that. Orillia is a nice place to live, we have been providing WETT Certified Inspections for over 20 years, let us help you to remain safe and have PEACE of MIND with a WETT Inspection.
When purchasing a new home with an existing wood burning appliance it is alwasy recommended that you have your chimney cleaned prior to inspection. A layer of Creosote can hide cracks or corrosion on clay and metal chimneys.
The C.S.I.A. recommends that open masonry fireplaces should be swept at 1/8″ of sooty buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present in the system. This is considered to be enough fuel buildup to cause a chimney fire capable of damaging the chimney or spreading to the home. Factory-built fireplaces should be swept when any appreciable buildup occurs. The logic is that the deposit is quite acidic and can shorten the life of the fireplace.
